Spangled Drongo

This handsome fellow visited my garden the other day. I rarely see these birds right here so maybe it was passing through on its way somewhere. They have such a raucous voice that it is easy to identify them when they are around.
A cropped photo to show the beautiful spangles.

  2. Well I've heard the name 'Drongo' but couldn't picture what it was until now. Thanks Mick. Am I right in thinking it is a clever 'mimic'?

  3. Hi Tabib, Gwendolen, and Frank. Thanks to all for your comments. I don't think this bird is a mimic, Frank. However one of my books says that there are 20 other similar birds and only one of the species in Australia.

  4. Lucky for you to have this Drongo visit your yard. Great job on the photos, getting the right exposure on a dark subject.

  6. Hi Tricia and Bob and Cynthia thanks for your comments. I checked my records and I haven't seen any of these birds in my garden since last winter - and they were just as hard to get close to and photograph then as now.

  7. Great captures Mick. I love that first shot that shows some nice color. Those black birds are difficult to get the light just right and you've done a great job!

  8. thanks for your comments BirdingMaine and Larry. You're right that black birds are hard to get the right lighting - this one was obliging enough to sit first in the shade under the tree and then out on the fence.
